In Sonoma your family can enjoy an array of outdoor activities and historical sites like Mission San Francisco Solano and the Sonoma Barracks, but honestly, you can’t come to Sonoma without doing a little wine tasting. Happily, many Sonoma wineries are kid-friendly. So pack up the family and fill up those glasses!

Benziger Family Wineries

Taste the difference of biodynamic estate wines at Benziger Family Wineries. By naturally nurturing the soil, raising sheep and cows and cultivating diverse plants to attract beneficial birds and insects, Benziger Family Wineries has created a thriving sustainable environment that is reflected in the flavors of the wines. Open Thursday through Monday from 10:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m, the winery is open to the public and features a lovely outdoor seating area where you can view the animals grazing the fields. You and the family can enjoy a fun 75 minute tractor tram tour through the vineyards Fridays through Sundays from 11:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m that concludes with a wine tasting for the adults. Children are allowed in the tasting room when accompanied by an adult, otherwise all other seated tastings and tours are 21 years and over.

Wine tasting and swimming? Yes, while your kids are having a blast splashing in one of Coppola Winery’s gigantic pools, you can enjoy a lovely wine tasting. For even more comfort, rent a private pool cabin complete with a shower, towels and board games. Hungry? Grab a poolside lunch at the Pool Cafe. If you are a movie buff, you will love the movie gallery where memorabilia from Coppola’s films are on display. There are also a ton of fun and free outdoor games available to play, like Bocce Ball, to keep every age in your group entertained. Make a day of it with a delicious meal at Rustic, the onsite restaurant, featuring Coppola’s favorite meals from around the world. Before you go, check out the gift shop for some fun goodies to take home.

Preston Farm & Winery is a family-owned organic farm with diverse crops, like vineyards, vegetables, fruit, olive trees, grain and even pastured livestock. Families are encouraged to come enjoy the day picnicking in the gardens, seeing the animals and tasting the wines, produce, baked goods, olives and olive oil from the farm and vineyards.  The beauty of the property is that everything grows in ordered chaos as the vineyards grow alongside the fruit trees with a mix of native and exotic plants and fields of grain. You will be sure to find an abundance of deliciousness around every corner. Plus the kids will enjoy the livestock like sheep, chickens and all winery cats. Right now, tastings and picnics are by reservation only. Before you go home, take some of the farm freshness with you with a stop in the farm shop, which sells fresh farm-grown produce and wines.

Cline Family Cellars

Family owned and operated since 1982, Cline Family Cellars makes for a beautiful location to enjoy a day outdoors. The winery has a welcoming environment and is currently open for tastings Thursdays through Mondays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Reservations are recommended. While you enjoy the wine, the kids will love exploring the property and visiting the animals, including their two Sicilian donkeys, Fancy & Pudding. You can visit the farmhouse or enjoy the outdoors at a table or cabana. The cabanas seat 4 to 8 guests, including kids. Visit during the Family Day on the Great Lawn for all day of picnicking, wine, lawn games and food trucks. This event is free and no reservations are needed. For more fun, check out the Mission Museum or take a guided tour.  There is even a villa on the property that can accommodate up to 10 overnight guests.

Buena Vista Winery

What makes this kid-friendly winery in Sonoma so cool is that it is one of the oldest premium wineries in California, founded in 1857! It is even said to be haunted, which definitely adds to the fun. For the living guests, this California Historic Landmark is open Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and opens an hour earlier on Saturday and Sundays. In addition to delicious wine, there are interactive activities for kids as well as guided tours with period actors. You can visit the old wine caves and the Historic Wine Tool Museum that is very entertaining. Some cool events include a living history fair that features live music and famous period characters like Mark Twain and more. The events at Buena Vista are always extra and the whole family it going to have a great time!
