Hotel Spotlight: Family review of Best Western Plus Sunset Suites Riverwalk in San Antonio

Historic building and just a few minutes from the infamous Riverwalk and Alamo

When you are traveling, sometimes you want to stay with a name you can trust. For our family that is Best Western Plus, because we have always had wonderful experiences with them. So, you can imagine how thrilled we were when they invited us to stay with them along the way during our 60 day cross country road trip.

Our first major stop was San Antonio, Texas where we dropped our bags at the Best Western Plus Sunset Suites Riverwalk. Here is what we loved about our stay and why we think it is a great pick for traveling families.

Location, location, location:

When traveling with kids, location is key. You want to be near the attractions you are going to see without having to deal with a ton of transport. Conveniently located in the historic St. Paul Square in downtown, Best Western Plus Sunset Suites Riverwalk is not only steps away from a variety of shops and dining options, it is also near the San Antonio Riverwalk and the Alamo. There is also this really neat old church next door that the kids and I enjoyed exploring the first day we checked in. It is so nice to get up in the morning and easily start our day of sightseeing. Then we simply return after a long day with tired kids. Check prices.

History & Character:

What I love about Best Western Plus hotels is that they usually have a ton of character and take great lengths to represent the destination. For example, although the Sunset Suites Riverwalk is a contemporary boutique hotel it still contains elements of the past. Representative of the historic late 1800’s building which it occupies, the hotel still has the original wood floors and brick walls. The historic lobby is sprinkled with photos from the past, allowing guests to learn about the history as they sip their morning coffee. Grams and I loved walking around looking at each photo and reading the caption below. Furthermore, the stained glass doors and mission-style décor that continues even into the guest rooms does well to capture the spirit of San Antonio. Check prices.

Oh The Amenities!

Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, or a little bit of both like I was, Best Western Plus Sunset Suites has everything you need for a successful trip. In addition to the hotel business amenities, like meeting and banquet facilities and free access to wifi, photocopying, multi-line phones and dataports, there is also plenty to make your stay comfortable and healthy. Earning an I Stay Green leaf, the hotel is also 100% smoke free and has an exercise facility, perfect for staying fit while traveling. If you are on the road for an extended period of time like us or just pack light, you’ll be happy to know that there is guest laundry to keep you super fresh.

We were lucky enough to score one of their spacious suites with two cozy mission-style beds as well as a sleeper sofa, which was perfect for our family size. There are even cribs available if you are traveling with a baby. Definitely something I will keep in mind as my travel posse grows. The rooms also have flat-screen TVs with cable satellite and in-room movies, microwaves, mini-friges, wet bars, coffee/tea makers, full size ironing boards and hair-dryers. Since Best Western Plus Sunset Suites Riverwalk is in such a great location, the rooms also have good views of downtown San Antonio. Check prices.

Complimentary Breakfast

I can’t tell you how much I love hotels that offer complimentary breakfast. I mean, it is so helpful when you are traveling with kids or have a jam packed day of activities. It seriously makes travel life so much easier to be able to grab something fast without having to leave your hotel. Being complimentary makes it even better, because it’s great for watching your food budget for extended trips. Kids can be so picky and I hate ordering the food sometimes, not sure what they really want or how much they’ll actually eat. This made it so easy and fun for the kids to choose their breakfast each morning and you know what? They more likely to eat it once they chose it! One of the highlights was the giant Texas-shaped BW waffle. How could you not love that?

*It is important to note that not all Best Western Pluses offer fully complimentary or the same style of breakfast. Best Western Sunset Suites Riverwalk offered a complimentary full breakfast buffet including choice of breads, cereal, fruit, eggs, yogurt, juice, coffee and hot items.

Competitive Rates:

We travel a lot and usually big cities come with big price tags. What I love most is that no matter the city, there is sure to be a Best Western and for a competitive rate. It makes it is so affordable and reliable for other families like mine who travel often with their kids. Making the deal even sweeter  are the Best Western Rewards, which is an awarding winning loyalty program and it is free to join. All you have to do is sign up, book a room and start earning points. Your points never expire, so there is no pressure, and for new members they will match any rewards on other loyalty programs. Plus, there are always exciting promotions ongoing that help to earn extra rewards. They just make it so darn easy to keep traveling. Check prices.

That’s A Wrap!

San Antonio was our first major stop on our epic family summer road trip and I can’t tell want a beautiful site the Best Western Plus Sunset Suites Riverwalk was after a 10 hour drive. We all squealed a little in the lobby, no joke. When you are visiting a place full of history, then it just adds to the experience to stay in an equally historical hotel. With Best Western Plus Sunset Suites Riverwalk, not only did we get the comforts and convenience, we also got the history of the destination. Their slogan is “Wherever Life Takes You, Best Western is There” and that couldn’t be more true. So, if life takes you to San Antonio, let it also take you to the Best Western Plus Sunset Suites Riverwalk. 1. I love San Antonio, and it’s so great that this hotel is located in the historic district and close to so many things. I love the Texas shaped waffles!

  2. I have never stayed at the Best Western although I have passed it many times during my travels. It is amazing how this hotel represents the historical past and the waffle makes a great breakfast. I can tell your kids love it!

    • Yeah, they have a variety of property styles and they are franchised, so individual proprietors make it for unique and quality experiences every time. The Plus and Premier properties are higher end. Those are the ones I prefer for comfort reasons.
