Piggybacking Trips

For most of us, money and time are the biggest constraints to continued travel. Okay, fear of flying is a big one too. That is why I like piggybacking trips. In other words, adding an extra jaunt to a planned trip. Piggybacking trips maximizes time, money and number of flights (eek).

I was raised to never let the party end; to always have something to look forward to. A great way to capitalize on travel plans is to extend layovers and see a city that wasn’t a part of the initial itinerary. Anthony Bourdain’s show Layover offers many great suggestions for experiencing a city in a short amount of time.

When traveling by car, check for any sites that might make for interesting pit-stop along the way. I am big on road trips, because they are rich with opportunities to squeeze in a plethora of experiences. For example, on our recent trip to Williams, Arizona we stayed a night in Laughlin. It broke up the trip and was a fun little side trip added to our original vacation.

Piggybacking Trips

Side trips can be big or small; it really depends on your time and money limitations. If you can spare some extra time, I recommend taking advantage when traveling to coastal cities. We travel to Florida every year for my husband’s conference. A business trip turned family vacation. Florida is exciting enough, but let’s up the ante. Since we already have to pay for flights across the country why not add little something extra while we are there?

HotDaddy made a brilliant suggestion, “Check to see if any cruises are going out the day after the conference.” Cruises are a very convenient and inexpensive way to see multiple destinations, especially without the added cost of airfare. To save even more money, check out my favorite site to book cruises: Vacations to Go. They offer amazing deals on last minute cruises. By piggy backing a last minute cruise onto an already planned trip saves the cost of extra airfare and about 82% off the cruise by using Vacations to Go. For our family that is a  $5,000 dollar savings!!! So kill two birds with one stone, stock pile those memories and save money!

So maximizes your time, your money and piggy back!
You are already there…do more!

Some great tips! I also like to make the most out of any opportunity to travel, although I can take it to extremes and suddenly do perhaps too much! I do especially love cruises as well. I always have had to add them to our trips whenever we have been to Florida.

I love the idea of extended layovers, we do this all the time as it breaks up long flights!

I love to travel, but I’m not the most relaxed flyer. I do it as much for me as I do it for the kids! Mama needs a break from the plane too!

We do that too! Whenever we travel to Europe to see my family, we add a few days somewhere else. Last time, we flew into Zurich and spend a few days in Switzerland before heading to Germany to my family and then also took a quick trip to Prague. So nice to be able to do this!

Yes, isn’t great? When you can it really is the best way to see more for less.

I am a big fan of the long layover in another city to make the most of time and money.
