Best Cinco de Mayo Cocktails

It is Cinco de Mayo people! Time to cut those limes, pour that tequila, rock those sombreros and get turnt mid-week. So what if actual Mexicans in Mexico don’t even celebrate, in America it is tiempo de fiesta!! What is Cinco de Mayo you ask? Well, it is the day that the Mexican army beat the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It is not Mexican Independence Day like many people think. So, why do Americans make such a big deal out of Cinco de Mayo? Interestingly enough, it effected the outcome of the Civil War. The French were going to help the Confederates by basing in Mexico and since that plan got dashed, the Union was able to grow strong and defeat the Confederates. So there you have it. Okay, enough history. Let’s drink! Here are HotMama’s picks for Best Cinco de Mayo Cocktails.

Best Cinco de Mayo Cocktails

Not only will I be sharing with you some of the fantastic bars from around the country serving up exciting cocktails for Cinco de Mayo, I’ll also be showing you how to make them at home! Yes, kids are welcomed to this Cinco de Mayo cocktail party. I’m all about family, so I have created fun mocktail versions of my picks for best Cinco de Mayo cocktails.

Best Cinco de Mayo Cocktails

The Mexican Martini:

This Cinco De Mayo cocktail was actually created at Cedar Door Restaurant in Austin, Texas in the 1970’s. Now a signature drink in Austin, bartenders all over the city are putting their own flair into this easy Cinco de Mayo cocktail. But don’t worry, Austin is the only place you can get your lips on a Mexican Martini. New City just opened an authentic Tex-Mex cantina, El Original and is serving up the Mexican Martini!

Mexican Martini Recipe:
Developed by Garrett Flanagan for El Original

• 1 ½ oz. Lime Juice
• 1 ½ oz. Simple Syrup
• 3 oz. Tequila
• ½ oz. Olive Juice

I would first, rim the martini glass with a chili-salt combo. Then shake all ingredients with ice and pour into the martini glass. Garnish with olives and enjoy!

Mexican Martini Mocktail Recipe:
This is a very simple Cinco de Mayo mocktail, because requires the same ingredients as the original cocktail recipe, minus the tequila.

• 1 ½ oz. Lime Juice
• 1 ½ oz. Simple Syrup
• ½ oz. Olive Juice

Rim a martini (glass or plastic) with chili/salt. I really like Tejin seasoning, because of the lime flavor and it is milder for kids’ palettes. Shake ingredients with ice and strain into rimmed martini glass and garnish with olives. For kids, I’d garnish with a lime wheel or wedge.

RHUMBARita:

The RHUMBAR is one of the few outdoor bars in Las Vegas and I love the hip Caribbean vibe. A great choice for a Cinco de Mayo cocktail is the tangy RHUMBARita for $12. I know I’ll be sipping on one this weekend!

RHUMBARita Recipe:

• 2 oz. Cimarrón tequila
• ¾ oz. Bittermens Citron Sauvage (grapefruit liqueur to replace Triple sec and adds a hue of pink to any drink)
• ½ oz. Grapefruit juice
• ½ oz. Lime juice
• ¼ oz. Simple syrup.

Use some Grapefruit juice to salt rim of glass, then add all the ingredients into a shaker. Shake with ice and strain into salted glass and add fresh ice. Garnish with a grapefruit wedge.

RHUMBARita Mocktail Recipe:

• 1 ½ oz. Lime Juice
• 1 ½ oz. Grapefruit Juice
• 2 oz. Simple Syrup

Use some Grapefruit Juice to rim glass with salt. Add all ingredients to shaker with ice and shake. Strain into glass and add fresh ice. Garnish with a Grapefruit wedge. (For some color use Pink Grapefruit Juice and take down the Simple Syrup).

Mariachi Mule:

Also in Las Vegas, this sweet and spicy Cinco de Mayo cocktail is being served up at TREVI Italian Restaurant, inside The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace for $12.

• 2 oz. Sweet Heat Tequila
• ½ oz. Lime Juice
• Top with Crabbie’s Ginger Beer

In a copper mug pour the tequila and lime juice. Add crushed iced and top with ginger beer. Garnish with a mint sprig.

Mariachi Mule Mocktail:

Okay, what makes this mule unique is the cinnamon spice of the tequila. So the mocktail needs to recreate the sweet spicy heat of the original Mariachi Mule.

1 oz. Lime Juice
1 oz. Cinnamon Syrup
Ginger Beer

Pour Lime Juice and Cinnamon Syrup into copper mug and stir. Add crushed ices and top with Ginger Beer. Garnish with a sprig.

Fun Flavored Margaritas:

I can’t mention Cinco de Drinko without talking about margaritas. We are all pretty much familiar with classic lime margarita, but it is a holiday and we got to have a little fun with this Cinco de Mayo classic cocktail. Experiment with different flavors and get outrageous as you want. RumFish Grill at Guy Harvey Outpost on St. Pete Beach is serving lots of exciting flavored margaritas like Blue Raspberry, Cherry, Grape, and Sour Apple. If you aren’t out, it is easy to make fruit flavored margaritas at home.

Blue Raspberry Margarita Recipe:

• 2 oz. Reposado Tequila
• 3/4 oz. Lime Juice
• ¾ oz. Blue Raspberry flavored liqueur (sub out for any flavor of choice).
• ½ oz. Agave Syrup

Rim your glass with either sugar or salt, before making the drink. Add all ingredients to shaker and shake with ice. Strain into rimed margarita glass, add fresh ice and garnish with a lime wedge or wheel.

Blue Raspberry Virgin Margarita Recipe:
Since, a flavored margarita is simple, let’s the virgin version simple as well.

• 3 oz. Limade
• 1 oz. Blue raspberry syrup

Rim glass with salt or sugar, before shaking all ingredients in shaker with ice. Strain into glass, add fresh ice and garnish with lime wedge and wheel.

Great stuff I always love a drink. Thanks for the recipes.
Yes, the Mexicans love to celebrate their Cinco de Mayo. What they often forget to mention is that the French came back a year later, beat the Mexicans, and installed their own administrator (Maximillian). They ruled Mexico for 3 years.

    Ok, time for a Margarita.
