Why You Should Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at Newport Dunes

St. Patrick's Day Newport Dunes

St. Patrick’s Day has always been one of my favorite holidays (just below Halloween of course). I was raised with Irish pride from my father. As a child, I learned how to jig (performing without solicitation); I learned some Gaelic, became obsessed with River Dance and even faked an Irish accent for most of third grade. My Irish pride did not fade as an adult and although my dad may joke that I am the only Irish girl that doesn’t care for potatoes, I can down my stout and whiskey just as well as any of them. Now, as a mama with babies of my own, I continue the tradition of family pride and celebration. I gave my daughter my maiden name of Keeley and my son was born on the 16th of March, (just in time for me to get home and party!). So, St. Patty’s is still a pretty big deal in our home, but that doesn’t mean we stay home! Here is how we did St. Patrick’s Day at Newport Dunes!

This year to celebrate my beautiful baby boy’s birthday and the luck of the Irish, we are loading up the RV and making it a weekend long party! Who says holidays have to be recognized for one day? As Zack Browne Band once said, “the whisky’s gone, but I ain’t leavin’.”

Keep the Cost in Check

Let’s be honest for a moment, birthday parties are expensive and a lot of work. Although I enjoy sprinkling in parties every now and then, I prefer to take trips and I think the kids do as well. Instead of spending a ton of money one day, for the same cost we get a whole weekend of fun. What a better gift than the gift of memories and adventure?

Drop your Bags

This year we splurged a bit on the camp spot, opting for the expensive Newport Dunes rather than the significantly less Vail Lake. But sometimes you got to go big, you know? By the time we all divide the cost it isn’t too dramatic anyway. Plus this weekend we all shacked up in the family RV, so no hotel cost! Whoop. Whoop. One camp site for our crew in Newport ($119+ depending on availability) verses getting a bunch of hotel rooms is a drastic difference in price. Although we are paying more for the site than normal, we still come out ahead.

We prepare the menu before the trip. Sis, Grams and this HotMama usually discuss the menu and delegate responsibilities over chilled tequila. This trip, we kept it simple. Friday night was set up night and no one wanted to cook so we ordered pizza! Easy, cheap and tasty; everyone is happy. Saturday was our big campsite meals day. In the morning HotDaddy and The Boss made breakfast burritos, which cost practically nothing to feed a group our size. In fact, they looked so yummy that other kids from other campsites were coming over trying to score one.

For lunch Grams made her famous pasta salad and tuna sandwiches. Sis put out a veggie platter, summer sausage and cheese to nibble on while we busied ourselves with beach activities. Recycling ingredients from breakfast, for we made hot links and wrapped them up in the tortillas.

Sunday was Cuddle Bear’s birthday and we had plans to hit the OC Marketplace, so we had easy breakfast of bagels and fruit. The marketplace provided two meals for us that day, deliciously juicy carnitas tacos, tender tri-tip to grill for dinner and a plethora of spreads for Greek Mama to enjoy with pita bread as an appetizer before the BBQ. Needless to say, we ate very well and spent less to feed our group than going to restaurants.

Chug-a-lug

We’re camping! So drinking is cheap and necessary. Lots of Irish beer, filler beer, champagne, wine, rum and whiskey were stocked and ready for drinking. We take our libations pretty seriously in this family so from sunrise to sundown we have a cocktail in hand. In addition to copious amounts of coffee, to get our morning started right we also consume refreshing Mimosas and Bloody Marys’. Good morning Newport! The rest of our days we spend drinking beer and other spirits; whatever you need we got it.

At the marketplace we were celebrating Irish Fest, so of course we had to have our green beers to represent our Irish pride!

Entertain Me!

When camping at the Newport Dunes there are tons of beach activities to keep everyone busy and happy. For the kids there is the playground on the sand with the famous blue whale to climb on. Kids can enjoy the beautiful sunset while swinging pleasantly on the shore. You can rent various water sports and yard games.

This HotMama my HotDaddy like to paddle board. It is just a really relaxing way to enjoy and afternoon on the water, plus it is a great core workout. We even take the kids sometimes, because it’s really calming and a great way to enjoy quality time together.

Since we were camping during St. Patrick’s weekend there were many Irish related activities as well as Irish Fest at the OC Marketplace. Irish dancers, Irish music, green beer and fun food trucks added a little extra excitement to our day.

That’s a Wrap!

St. Patrick’s Day is a holiday that most people celebrate in one day at the local pub, but I encourage everyone to think outside the box and prolong the fun. I love the pubs, but I love the pubs even more when I’m out of town! As the Irish (and family) say, “It is better to spend money like there’s no tomorrow than to spend tonight like there’s no money!” Happy St. Patrick’s everyone!
