Best Mexican Cocktails

Hola! Being from Southern California, visiting Mexico is muy fecil (very easy). It’s a vacay my family has taken several times and if you haven’t yet, put it on the list. It makes for a great weekend away with beautiful landscapes and reasonable prices. Mexico has beaches, jungles, cities, an exciting culture, great food and great cocktails! Can’t get to Mexico right now? No problem, we are traveling together via drank! Mexicans know how to have a great time and it shows in their cocktail recipes! Hello Tequila!! I love you!  Check out my Hot Mama picks for favorite Mexican Cocktails.

Let’s start with a classic. Who doesn’t love a good Margarita sometimes? Especially when washing down crispy chips and spicy salsa! No blended crap, we are going on the rocks, baby!

2 oz Tequila Reposado
¾ oz Orange Curacao
¾ oz Lime Juice (fresh is best)
½ oz Agave Syrup

Rub lime wedge along rim of Margarita glass and dip into coarse salt. Add all ingredients to shaker and shake with ice. Strain into salted Margarita glass and fill with ice. Garnish with lime wedge.

Margarita Mocktail
1 ½ oz Lime Juice or Limeade (depending on how sweet you like it)
1 ½ oz Orange Juice
½ oz Agave Syrup

Rub lime wedge on rim of plastic Margarita glass and dip rim into salt or sugar. Add all ingredients to shaker with ice and shake. Strain into plastic Margarita glass and garnish with lime wedge.

Sis & HotMama going big!

Sis & HotMama going big!

You all know by now, that this HotMama loves her some spicy Bloody Marys, but when I’m in Mexico (or pretending to be) I LOVE to sip on Micheladas!!

1 Bottle or can of Mexican Lager
3 oz Clamato Juice (or tomato)
Dash Hot Sauce
Dash Worcestershire or Soy Sauce
1 oz Lime Juice
Tajin Seaoning

Rub lime wedge around rim of pint or highball glass and dip into Tajin Seasoning. Pour in Clamato or Tomato Juice. Add Hot Sauce and Worcestershire. Then fill with beer. Garnish with lime

Michelada Mocktail

4 oz Tomato or Clamato Juice (kids may prefer tomato)
Dash of Worcestershire or Soy Sauce
Dash of hot sauce (opt out for kids, unless they like spicy)
1 oz Lime Juice
2 oz of Club soda for sparkle (more if desired)
Tajin Seasoning

Rub lime wedge around rim of plastic pint glass and dip in Tajin (you can opt for coarse salt). Fill glass with ingredients and top with sparkling water. Garnish with lime. Kids probably won’t drink a full glass of this mocktail, so make less if you need.

From the gas station already mixed, just add beer. Love it!!

Minus the Clamato/ Tomato Juice and spices and you have a Chelada. Also very yummy and refreshing.

This next cocktail is very popular and very refreshing. The Paloma is perfect after a day on the beach! It is almost like a Margarita with grapefruit.

2 oz Tequila
¾ oz Lime Juice
¾ oz Grapefruit Juice (pink if you want it extra purrdy)
½ oz Agave Syrup

Add all ingredients to shake and fill with ice. Shake it baby. Then strain into highball glass and fill with fresh ice. Garnish with lime twist or wedge.

Paloma Mocktail
1 ½ oz Limeade
1 ½ oz Pink Grapefruit Juice (more fun for kids)
½ oz Agave Syrup

Shake all ingredients and strain into plastic highball glass. Fill with ice and garnish with lime wedge.

Horchata is a very popular iced rice milk drink. You can find it available at any taco shop or Mexican restaurant. If you’ve never had it, it is a creamy cinnamon flavor, but the rice milk adds a chalky texture. It takes a few sips to get used to the rice milk, but the flavors are delicious like a liquid cinnamon roll.

Dirty Horchata
2 oz of aged Rum (any dark rum will do if can’t get aged, but aged has a deep richer flavor)
1 oz Espresso
1 oz Horchata (store bought or homemade)

Add ingredients to shaker. Fill with ice and shake. Strain into coupe glass and garnish with grated cinnamon and nutmeg. You make also blend this drink if you choose.

Dirty Horchata Mocktail
3 oz Hochata
1 oz Decaf coffee
½ oz Chocolate Syrup

Shake ingredients and strain into plastic coupe glass. Blend if you want it to be like a milkshake. Garnish with cinnamon and nutmeg, maybe some chocolate sprinkles for kids.

We’ve done a lot of sweet, tart and light; now let’s get dark and smoky.

Mexican House Party
1 oz Mescal (smoky agave spirit)
1 oz Cherry Heering
1 oz Sweet Vermouth
¾ oz Orange Juice

Combine all ingredients into shaker. Shake with ice and strain into chilled Martini glass. Garnish with Orange Twist. Enjoy with a nice cigar!

Mexican House Party Mocktail
2 oz Iced Tea (black tea is best)
1 oz Cherry Juice or 2 muddled cherries
1 oz Orange Juice

Shake all ingredients and strain into plastic Martini glass. Garnish with Orange wedge and Cherries (kids can eat them). Iced tea adds the earthy flavor, similar to the mescal.
